How do you ensure that a mobile surveillance system continues to operate reliably when deployed at a remote location? For municipalities, security companies and other organizations, mobile camera systems offer a flexible way to monitor premises and public areas. However, when a camera, router or power supply system fails, visiting the site is not always straightforward.
The American company Valorence Mobile Surveillance uses the ControlByWeb X-410 I/O controller for this purpose, among other solutions. This allows various components of mobile surveillance installations to be monitored and controlled remotely.
This case study demonstrates how remote monitoring, I/O control and automation contribute to the management of professional surveillance systems.
This case study is based on a ControlByWeb project describing the application at Valorence Mobile Surveillance.
The challenges of mobile surveillance systems
Mobile surveillance systems are deployed in locations where permanent camera surveillance is unavailable or impractical. Examples include construction sites, parking areas, event venues and remote industrial sites.
Valorence Mobile Surveillance develops modular surveillance solutions for municipalities and government agencies, among others. The company supplies systems that can be mounted on poles or buildings, as well as mobile surveillance trailers that can be temporarily deployed at different locations.
These installations combine cameras, networking equipment, lighting, sensors and power supply systems. Some systems use solar panels and batteries, allowing them to operate without a fixed power connection.
This presents an important challenge: how can the system remain operational when a component is not functioning properly?
An unresponsive IP camera or router can disrupt the operation of the installation. Without remote control capabilities, a technician may need to visit the site to resolve the problem.
ControlByWeb X-410 as the central controller
To manage the various components of its surveillance systems, Valorence uses the ControlByWeb X-410.
This programmable I/O controller operates as a separate control layer alongside the cameras, network recorders and communication equipment. This allows certain components to be monitored and controlled independently.
One important example is remotely restarting IP cameras. When a camera stops responding, the controller can interrupt and restore its power supply. This eliminates the need to send someone to the installation for every malfunction.
The network connection also plays an important role. By using a separate mobile communication connection for control purposes, an installation can remain accessible for management in certain situations when the main router fails.
The controller does not process camera footage itself but supports the management of the equipment needed to keep the surveillance system operational.
More than just restarting cameras
Within Valorence's systems, ControlByWeb technology is used for several functions.
Temperature and humidity monitoring
Electronic equipment in enclosed housings can be exposed to high temperatures and changing weather conditions. By monitoring temperature and humidity, the system can respond when conditions exceed predefined limits. If necessary, components can be automatically switched off to prevent damage.
Controlling fans and lighting
The controllers can operate fans to regulate the temperature inside an enclosure. Warning lights can also be activated remotely. This is particularly relevant for visible surveillance installations where lighting also serves as a deterrent.
Monitoring solar power systems
Some mobile installations use solar panels and batteries as their power source. Through Modbus TCP/RTU, ControlByWeb controllers can communicate with the solar charge controller to monitor charging status and generate alerts when power supply problems occur.
By combining these functions, a single control layer is created through which various technical components of the installation can be managed.
Less on-site maintenance
For Valorence, the ability to manage systems remotely is an important part of its services.
The controllers provide status information and alerts that help identify potential problems earlier. Certain malfunctions can also be investigated and resolved remotely.
According to Valorence, this approach contributes to higher availability of its surveillance installations and reduces the time employees spend resolving technical problems.
The company has been using ControlByWeb controllers since its founding in 2010. The technology has therefore been a long-standing part of its mobile surveillance solutions.
The role of I/O controllers in remote monitoring
The Valorence application demonstrates that I/O controllers are not only suitable for traditional industrial automation. They can also play an important role in systems where different devices, sensors and communication connections work together.
The ControlByWeb X-410 combines digital inputs, relay control and programmable logic with network functionality. This allows devices and sensors to be connected and enables the system to respond automatically to predefined conditions.
Similar control principles are also relevant to other installations that require remote management, such as technical rooms, communication infrastructure and unattended monitoring stations.
