LoRa and LoRaWAN for wireless sensors
This page is intended for facility managers, building automation integrators, IoT developers and technical buyers who are planning a LoRa project or want to compare suitable components.
LoRa is suitable for IoT projects with many wireless sensors, small data volumes and long battery life. Typical applications include building monitoring, CO2 and temperature measurement, water and energy metering, leak detection, asset tracking and industrial condition monitoring. At Antratek, you will find suitable gateways, sensor nodes, Modbus bridges, I/O nodes, testers and trackers for getting started and for scaling later.
LoRa is designed for many sensors that consume little power and need to bridge long distances, both indoors and outdoors. Think of air quality/comfort (CO2, temperature/RH) in offices and education, water and energy metering in real estate, leak detection and door/occupancy monitoring in facility environments, or condition monitoring in industry. With 1–3 gateways, you can quickly create coverage on a campus or in a multi-storey building. Choosing between WiFi, 4G/5G or LoRa? Rule of thumb: WiFi for short distances with an existing LAN; 4G/5G for high bandwidth per device; LoRa for large numbers of sensors with long battery life. Start with a pilot of 20–50 sensors; within a week you will see whether coverage, battery life and interval are suitable. Antratek supplies hardware, site-survey tips and a simple data flow to BMS/SCADA/Dashboard. In short: LoRa is suitable for many sensors with little cabling and long battery life. WiFi = short range & LAN, 4G/5G = high bandwidth, LoRa = many low-power sensors. Start with 20–50 sensors; we help with survey, antennas and configured payloads. The basis: (a) sensors/I/O nodes, (b) a gateway with internet access (Ethernet or LTE) and (c) a data endpoint (dashboard, BMS/SCADA or cloud). Do you already have meters? With Modbus or pulse bridges, you can read existing water/energy meters wirelessly. For pilots, we recommend: 1 gateway, 20–50 sensors distributed across zones/floors, a tester to measure coverage, and standard payloads so that data comes in directly. Investment is modular: start small, gain immediate insight, then expand per building/hall. The biggest gain is in installation time (less cabling) and faster decision-making based on real data. In short: sensors + gateway + data endpoint. Existing meters via Modbus/pulse. Pilot = 1 gateway, 20–50 sensors, tester, standard payloads. Start small, then scale. Guideline: 1–5 years of battery life at normal intervals (depending on sensor, payload and RF environment). Optimise with event-based measurements (only transmit on change/alarms), compact payloads and good antenna/placement. In offices, one gateway often covers 2–4 floors; in halls, height and an external antenna help. Check this with a LoRa tester (SNR/RSSI, packet loss). Reliability is ensured with OTA updates, key management and health logging. For backhaul at difficult locations, LTE fallback is practical. Antratek supplies antenna tips, pilot scripts and payload examples to make this predictable. In short: 1–5 years of battery life; use event-based measurements and place the right antenna correctly. One gateway ≈ 2–4 floors (office). Test with a LoRa tester. OTA, key management and health logs make it robust. Work endpoint-first: choose your dashboard, BMS (e.g. BACnet) or SCADA/Analytics (MQTT/OPC UA/REST). This determines the payload/codec and the gateway. In practice, we publish MQTT topics or BACnet objects with TLS/certificates and roles. No platform yet? Start with a prebuilt dashboard; you can switch later without difficulty. We provide mapping templates and often realise a working connection within 1 hour, so your organisation sees value immediately. In short: choose the endpoint first. Usually we publish MQTT or BACnet with TLS/certificates. Without a platform, you can start simply; templates speed up mapping. Choose one location, place 1 gateway and select 20–50 sensors (mix of comfort/energy/leak detection). Define 3–5 KPIs (e.g. CO2 threshold, water leak, peak consumption) and let it run for 48–72 hours. Evaluate battery impact, coverage, data quality and alarms. Good results? Expand per floor/hall. We supply starter sets, test coverage with a LoRa tester and ensure that data arrives at your endpoint. In short: 1 gateway + 20–50 sensors, define KPIs, run for 48–72 hours, evaluate and scale. Starter sets, testers and quick integration help. Yes. With pulse adapters (S0) and Modbus bridges, you can make existing water/energy meters “smart”. For assets, use trackers (LoRa + often BLE/WiFi sniffing + GNSS) for position and status. By publishing everything via MQTT/BACnet/REST, you get one dashboard for context and alerts. We help with payload harmonisation and ensure that everything remains scalable. In short: connect meters via pulse/Modbus bridges and add tracking. Publish to a dashboard. Hardware + payload examples = quickly live, easy to scale later.Quick answers

On the south coast of England, a residential area is located near a steep coastal cliff. Following a period of heavy rainfall, part of the cliff collapsed in 2024. This prompted the local community to launch the HASTE project, with the aim of better understanding the cliff's stability and identifying potential risks earlier.
